DMT contributes to the psychedelic Ayahuasca experience. When orally ingested, DMT is not psychoactive for humans unless accompanied by a monoamine oxidase-inhibitor (MAO-inhibitor). The special preparation employed by shamans to brew the Banisteriopsis caapi vine with chacruna leaves containing DMT yields MAO-inhibiting harmala alkaloids, which render the DMT orally active.
